The Pulse of the Rendubutowe Indigenous Community

Written by: Fransiskus Pati Herin, Kompas.id

Rendubutowe, the name of a village in South Aesesa Subdistrict, Nagekeo Regency, East Nusa Tenggara, has recently been discussed. This is due to the local indigenous community’s resistance to the construction of the Mbay Lambo Dam. The largest dam project in NTT with a value of Rp 1.4 trillion uses 496.14 hectares of community land. Not only empty land. There are gardens, longevity plants, houses, graves, and places where traditional ceremonies have been carried out for generations.

Under pressure and intimidation, residents surrendered their land to the government. Now, their days are filled with anxiety and uncertainty. They have lost many things. Many hopes were expressed regarding the injustices experienced by the community, such as their customary land being valued very cheaply by the government.

There are also many inspiring stories recorded there. The spirit of mutual cooperation, the women who weave for a living, and the sacredness of traditional prayers that continue to be maintained. Rendubutowe is very memorable.
